Keeping your weight under control is one of the best things you can do to live a longer and happier life.

It is not unusual to allow your weight to slowly add on as you get older, while it is also normal to have had a weight problem your entire life.

However, being overweight puts you at a much higher health risk for a variety of diseases. Here is a look at some of the reasons why.

Diabetes is a major health problem that is clearly linked to body weight. Overweight people are much more likely to develop type 2 diabetes. Losing weight can allow diabetics to see an improvement in blood sugar shortly after losing even a couple pounds. Having diabetes also increases your risk of developing heart disease and cancer.

Heart disease is the biggest killer in the United State, and the American Heart Association estimates that someone dies approximately every 33 seconds from a heart attack.
Half of adults also have hypertension, and these are both tied to being overweight. The more weight you have, the harder your heart needs to work.

A poor diet can also cause other heart-related issues like arteriosclerosis, and higher cholesterol, triglycerides, and homocystine. People who lose weight will often see a drop in their blood pressure, reducing risks.

Osteoporosis is another major problem, especially for women. It can lead to bone fractures and spinal vertebrae collapsing. Losing weight may help prevent the disease by relieving pressure on the bones and joints.

It can also help with back problems, since for every 10 pounds of weight you add to your frame your muscles have to compensate by exerting up to 50 more pounds of pressure.

Another big killer is cancer, and its rates continue to climb. Being overweight may not directly cause cancer, but overweight women have a higher frequency of breast, cervical, and ovarian cancers. Men eating high fat diets have higher rates of prostate cancer.

Preventing disease is only part of living longer; you also have to keep up your mind and your body. Of all the people that lived to be 100 or older, none were overweight, and all were normal or below normal in body weight.

Keeping weight down can even improve your sex life. The better you feel about yourself, the more you will enjoy having sex. Even losing some of your excess weight can make you feel better about yourself.

All in all, keeping an ideal body weight will help you feel better and live longer. This does not mean that you have to starve yourself or look like a skeleton with skin on.
Your doctor will be able to advice you of specific weight loss tactics to help you shed the extra pounds. He or she can also give you a realistic weight loss goal that matches up with your individual health and body type.
A doctor should always be consulted before making any drastic changes in your routine.

Osteoporosis: Keeping Your Bones Strong

Health

osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a problem affecting millions of people. While it can affect anyone, older women are particularly at risk. It is debilitating, leaving many senior unable to live life without some sort of assistance.

The causes of osteoporosis are varied.
Not having enough of different hormones, too much or too little exercise, deficiencies of certain vitamins and minerals, urine elimination of calcium, and smoking are all causes.
Other issues that are not as easily controlled are those related to genetics, such as having a small body frame, being Asian or Caucasian, and getting older.
Having less dense and smaller bones, family disposition, and poor nutrition as a teenager can also have an effect, as well as women who entered menopause early, either naturally or artificially.

The good news is that there are ways to help prevent osteoporosis. And, the sooner you start on them, the more effective they can be.

Nutrition, exercise, and medication can all help prevent osteoporosis. By changing to a more natural lifestyle, you can help prevent or even reverse osteoporosis and keep yourself living healthy longer.

A good place to start is with exercising. Weight-bearing ones are great, as is walking and resistance training.
If you can, try to walk daily and add in some resistance workouts a few times a week for optimum results.

Keep in mind that you are what you eat. Getting enough calcium is an important part of keeping your bones strong, so starting with a diet that includes plenty of calcium rich foods is key. Plus, this can be achieved even if you cannot handle dairy (or just prefer not too). Broccoli, dark green leafy vegetables, salmon, soybeans, and other foods are also high in calcium.

Sulfur is another key component to good bones. Including garlic, onions, and eggs into your diet can help you get sufficient amounts.

You may also consider taking a calcium supplement. The best supplements will also include magnesium, boron, and vitamin D, which help calcium get absorbed.

Get outside! Getting an hour of sunlight each day will help your body synthesize the vitamin D you need naturally.

There are also things that you should avoid doing in order to help prevent osteoporosis. Stopping smoking is critical for good health all around. Avoid soft drinks and alcohol that contain phosphates, since these can affect calcium absorption.

Stay away from sedentary life-styles, and become as active as possible. Stay away from yeast, which contains phosphorus, a mineral that can be absorbed in place of calcium. Also try to eat your whole grains separate from your calcium for the day, since they can prevent absorption. Taking your calcium supplement before bedtime is best. Lastly, eat as few sugar-based foods as possible.

All of these things can not only help prevent osteoporosis, but will also help you to feel younger and healthier in general. Remember to talk with your doctor before making any drastic changes in your diet or exercise routine.

Your Weight As a Senior IS Important!

Health

diabetes

osteoporosis

overweight

seniors

weight

While maintaining a healthy body weight is important no matter how old you are, it becomes exceeding critical after you pass over the age of 50. However, as we age, life and responsibilities take over, and we spend more time indoors taking care of them.
However, sun exposure has been a natural treatment for all sorts of medical issues throughout history, and taking some time to get outside can help keep you feeling young.

Sunlight can be particularly helpful in improving your mood. Exposure to sunlight causes your body to produce more serotonin, which is the chemical that stimulates the pleasure center in your brain. This naturally improves your mood. As we age, it is important to get enough sunlight exposure, especially during the winter months.

Sunlight also is crucial in creating vitamin D in our bodies. Vitamin D can help prevent and treat breast cancer, osteoporosis, prostate cancer, and more. The best source is gotten from the synthesis by ultraviolet light in the skin, and you can get most of your daily requirements just from a little time outdoors!

Breast cancer is a health concern for all women. A study done at the Northern California Cancer center found that casual exposure to sunlight can reduce the risk of breast cancer by up to 65%. Even the lower number of 25% that the study found would mean that getting some time outdoors could save around 44,000 women from the disease.

Osteoporosis happens when bone mass is lost because calcium is not absorbed properly. This causes an increased risk of bones breaking all around the body, and is mostly an issue for women who have reached menopause. A lack of Vitamin D means that calcium will not be absorbed properly.

Prostate cancer is one of the leading killers of senior men. However, fewer cases are found among men who live in warmer climates, and research suggests that this may be because they are outside more, and therefore producing more vitamin D.

Sunlight has also been shown to help with athletic achievement. It is not unusual to have more energy during the summer months when there is more sunlight to be had.
Studies of athletes have shown that sunlight can help enhance the performance and limit the number of injuries, while shortening the recovery time for injuries that did happen.
When it works this well for athletes, it would only make sense that spending some time outdoors is good for all of us.

Obviously, there is also such a thing as getting too much sun.
When outdoors, especially in direct sunlight, take care not to get overheated. Take plenty of water with you, and make sure to take plenty of rest breaks to avoid overtiring yourself.

In summer months when the heat is high, consider making your outdoor time part of your early morning routine before it gets too warm.

Also, when going outside for extended periods of time, take care to use sun protection to avoid burning and causing sun damage to your skin. Always consult your doctor before taking up a new routine.
